The 80s and the 90s was when games like Pac-Man and Mario were turning into the big names in the gaming and technology industries. One of the pioneers of colorful games was Donkey Kong (1981). Colors such as the princess' pink dress to Mario's red overalls and Donkey Kong's wide grin gave these characters their personalities and helped players get more involved in the stories.

On top of that, Super Mario Bros (1985) had a fully colored background with moving elements also in color. Since the advent of Super Mario Bros, games were no long confined to a static playing field. Side-scrolling and players running in a long horizaontal location were becoming more normalized in games, especially platform games.

Mario and Donkey Kong were also some of the first games to have a storyline.
